The Monsoon Session of Parliament came to an end on Monday with both Houses adjourning sine die.
Before adjourning, the Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2022 was introduced in Lok Sabha. Several Members opposed its introduction on the grounds that it proposes indiscriminate privatization and weakens the powers of the state commissions. Addressing concerns of some states, the Energy Minister, for his part, clarified that there are no provisions to stop subsidies with the proposed amendments. The Bill was then sent to the Standing Committee on Energy (Chair: Rajiv Ranjan Singh).
The House then discussed and passed the Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill, 2022 and the New Delhi International Arbitration Centre (Amendment) Bill, 2022.
In Rajya Sabha, Members bid farewell to the outgoing Chairman of the House. Mr. Naidu's term comes to an end on Wednesday, Aug 10. Members commended the Chairman’s leadership for upholding the dignity of the House and encouraging young MPs. Members also appreciated the Chairman's initiative to make it possible for them to participate in debates in their native language.
The House then discussed and passed the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2022. The Bill was introduced and passed in Lok Sabha last week.
